Teledyne FLIR Defense to Support AV’s Titan MS C-UAS Solution for US Air Force

In a significant development that highlights the growing importance of counter-drone technology, Teledyne FLIR Defense has announced its partnership with AeroVironment, Inc. (AV) to deliver its Argus XL counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) platform as part of AV’s Titan Multi-Sensor (MS) C-UAS counter-drone solution for the U.S. Air Force.

The orders are being executed under AV’s three-year, $500 million Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) sole-source contract supporting Joint Interagency Task Force (JIATF) 401’s Domestic Shield Program. JIATF-401 selected the Titan MS system to provide layered counter-UAS protection for domestic installations and critical infrastructure. Teledyne FLIR Defense’s Argus XL provides the radar, visible and thermal imaging sensors, and command-and-control software that serve as core detection capabilities within the Titan MS architecture.

The increasing threat of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has led to a growing need for effective counter-drone solutions. The U.S. Air Force recognizes this necessity and is investing heavily in developing advanced C-UAS systems to protect its installations and critical infrastructure from drone threats. AV’s Titan MS solution, with Teledyne FLIR Defense’s Argus XL at its core, represents a significant step forward in this effort.

We are proud to collaborate with AV to deliver advanced counter-drone technology that enables the U.S. military to detect, classify, track, and respond to increasingly complex unmanned aerial threats," said Dr. JihFen Lei, President of Teledyne Defense and Aerospace Group and Senior Vice President of Teledyne Technologies.

The Argus XL C-UAS is a fixed-site, multi-sensor platform designed to detect and track multiple aerial targets, near and far, around the clock, and in demanding weather conditions. The system integrates Teledyne FLIR Defense’s advanced radar, electro-optical and infrared cameras, and command-and-control software to deliver situational awareness, sensor integration, and data archiving. Argus XL also supports integration with third-party radio-frequency sensors and defeat technologies, helping provide hemispherical detection of aerial targets, including small and micro drones.

The importance of situational awareness in counter-drone operations cannot be overstated. In today’s complex threat landscape, operators need real-time, accurate information to detect and respond to drone threats effectively. Argus XL’s advanced sensor suite provides this critical capability, enabling users to track multiple aerial targets simultaneously and in challenging weather conditions.

One of the key advantages of the Argus XL is its ability to integrate with other sensors and defeat technologies. This allows operators to leverage a comprehensive defense strategy that encompasses multiple layers of detection and response. For example, the system can be configured to work seamlessly with radio-frequency sensors, which can detect and track drone signals in real-time.

The U.S. Air Force has recognized the potential of Teledyne FLIR Defense’s counter-UAS solutions and has selected AV’s Titan MS system for its Domestic Shield Program. The program aims to provide layered protection against drone threats at domestic installations and critical infrastructure, including military bases, embassies, and other sensitive facilities.

Countering drone threats is a complex challenge that requires multiple layers of detection and response," said General John W. Nicholson Jr., Commander, US Air Force Space Command. “The Titan MS system, with Teledyne FLIR Defense’s Argus XL at its core, represents a critical step forward in this effort. We are confident that this solution will provide our personnel and facilities with the advanced protection they need to counter emerging threats.

The partnership between Teledyne FLIR Defense and AV highlights the growing importance of counter-drone technology and the need for effective solutions to address this growing threat. As drone threats continue to evolve, operators will require increasingly sophisticated defense strategies that leverage advanced sensors, software, and integration capabilities.

In this context, the Argus XL C-UAS represents a significant advancement in the field of counter-UAS systems. Its ability to detect and track multiple aerial targets simultaneously, in challenging weather conditions, and its integration with other sensors and defeat technologies make it an essential component of any effective counter-drone solution.

As the U.S. Air Force continues to develop and deploy advanced C-UAS systems like AV’s Titan MS solution, Teledyne FLIR Defense remains committed to supporting these efforts with its proven counter-UAS solutions.
