In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI), a new approach has emerged as the most effective way to collaborate with machines. The notion that “the best interface to AI is no interface” may seem counterintuitive, but it’s gaining traction among designers and developers.
After two years in the IT industry, 23-year-old Suyash joined one of the popular boot camps in the country, where he wanted to pivot towards something more user-facing. However, concerns arose when Figma, a ubiquitous design tool, launched several AI-integrated features, such as First Draft, which speed up the ideation process by generating UI concepts with a simple prompt.
These new features have sparked fears among entry-level designers, but product designer and author Akshay Kore emphasizes that AI is not yet a step in the design process but an option to augment the user experience. He stresses the importance of good communication skills and conveying ideas effectively between teams.
Kore’s views are echoed by Shreyas Satish, founder and CEO of Ownpath, a design training and consultancy firm. He believes that AI will blur the lines between designers, front-end developers, and product managers, calling it “design engineering.” Satish emphasizes the value of user research as novel AI products come into play, highlighting the need to pick specific customer segments and design personalized experiences.
Moreover, the ability to sniff out problems will become increasingly important. Users may struggle to explain their issues and what they want, echoing Henry Ford’s famous quote: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”
Prompt Canvas, a novel UX for prompt engineering, is already making waves in the AI community. Its collaborative features enable developers to draft, refine, and edit prompts in real-time, revolutionizing the way we interact with machines.
Good design is not just about aesthetics but about creating seamless user experiences. As we move forward in this era of AI, embracing the philosophy of “no interface” and collaborating with machines can create a future where humans and technology work together in harmony. By doing so, designers can augment their capabilities without replacing themselves, but rather working alongside machines to create something entirely new.
