The unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) industry continues to evolve, driven by a growing number of women making significant contributions to public safety drone operations. The Women DRONERESPONDERS (WDR) Sub-Alliance is hosting its second official meeting at the National Public Safety UAS Conference on March 11, 2025.
The event aims to bring together women leaders, operators, and advocates to share experiences, strengthen professional networks, and showcase the unique value women bring to this field. The WDR initiative focuses on providing mentorship, fostering collaboration, and empowering women in UAS roles. This is essential, as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports that women make up only 3% of the drone pilot workforce.
Organizations like WDR are working to change this narrative by providing opportunities for growth and development. The WDR steering committee includes a diverse group of individuals with expertise in UAS operations, risk management, and leadership. Paige Fitzgerald, deputy director of the Delaware Emergency Management Agency, will share her experiences in implementing UAS programs within emergency management agencies.
Chuck Moran, founder of Online Video Mastery, will discuss the importance of storytelling in showcasing UAS applications. Katie Thielmeyer, risk reduction officer and UAS program manager for the Woodlawn Fire Department in Cincinnati, will highlight the role of women in public safety drone operations.
The meeting will provide a platform for attendees to connect with fellow professionals, learn about leadership opportunities within WDR, and gain insights into the latest trends and innovations in UAS technology. This aligns with the broader mission of DR to advance lifesaving drone technology and improve public safety.
By spotlighting the contributions of women in public safety drone operations, this event underscores the growing importance of diversity in advancing UAS applications. As the industry continues to evolve, recognizing and celebrating the achievements of women who are shaping the future of UAS technology is essential.
