Ukraine Unleashes Countermeasure To Outwit Russias High-Tech Glide-Bombs

The Battle of Signals: Ukraine’s Response to Russia’s “Miracle” Glide-Bombs

In early 2024, Russia modified its KAB glide-bombs with enhanced satellite radios, introducing a new challenge for Ukrainian electronic warfare developers. The Ukrainians responded by deploying their latest jammer, Lima Focus, designed to counter the improved Russian munitions.

The Russian KAB glide-bombs had already proven to be a formidable force on the battlefield, with advanced navigation systems allowing them to strike targets with unprecedented accuracy. The introduction of the Cometa-8 eight-channel CRPA system further increased their effectiveness, making them harder to defeat by electronic means. Ukraine’s Night Watch electronic warfare team knew they had to act quickly to respond to this new threat.

The development of the Lima Focus was a testament to Ukraine’s bootstrap approach to jammer-development, where experts like Alchemist reverse-engineered technical protocols from enemy technologies and designed new solutions in-house. This process has earned Night Watch a reputation for its innovative approaches and fruitful relationships with international partners.

When the Ukrainian defense ministry’s electronic warfare department expressed interest in the Lima Focus, Alchemist and his team were eager to deploy their creation. However, the general staff in Kyiv accelerated the certification process, allowing for same-day deployment of the jammer near Hremyach in Kharkiv Oblast. The results were immediate and decisive: Russian KAB strikes ceased in the area within a week.

The Ukrainian intelligence community intercepted Russian pilots complaining over radio that satellite navigation signals were failing 60 miles from the front. This was a critical breakthrough, as it revealed that the Lima Focus was effective even at longer ranges than anticipated.

The Zaporizhzhia regional council was among the first to formally order Lima Focus units from Night Watch, with reports of halted KAB strikes in the city soon after deployment. The electronic warfare department’s formal certification made it easier for government agencies to acquire the jammer, further solidifying its use on the battlefield.

However, Russia was not about to give up. In response to the Ukrainian countermeasure, they undertook their fourth major upgrade to the KAB navigation kits, adding four more radio channels to enhance their munitions’ effectiveness. This move underscores the ongoing cat-and-mouse game between the two nations’ military technologies.

To suppress this threat, 12-fold emitter coverage is needed, Alchemist explained. Without it, the current E.W. fields lose effectiveness—causing rising hit frequency. The challenge facing Ukraine is to maintain its edge in electronic warfare, while the Russians continue to adapt and improve their munitions.

The battle of signals between Ukraine and Russia serves as a reminder of the nation’s resilience and ingenuity in the face of adversity. As both sides strive for technological superiority, this high-stakes game will continue to shape the conflict.
