Akara Robotics Brings Cleaning Efficiency to UK Hospitals with Cutting-Edge Robots

Dublin-based start-up Akara Robotics has introduced its innovative UV decontamination robots to a UK hospital, with the company’s roots dating back to Trinity College Dublin. Over a decade of research and development laid the groundwork for its future expansion into the UK market.

In 2021, Akara trialled cleaning robots at Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore, followed by a two-year trial at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in their endoscopy unit. The company’s commitment to improving healthcare efficiency is evident in these trials, which demonstrate its technology’s potential in the UK market.

Now, Akara has partnered with Friarage Hospital to deploy two of its decontamination robots, designed to navigate and clean clinical rooms autonomously. The AI capabilities enable them to operate independently, allowing frontline staff to focus on patient care while the machines do their part in maintaining a sterile environment.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) pose a significant threat to patients worldwide, with approximately 1 million deaths annually according to the World Health Organization. By leveraging its AI-powered technology, Akara aims to contribute to the fight against HAIs and improve patient safety.

“We are proud to see our robots working in a hospital setting,” said Niamh Donnelly, co-founder and chief robotics officer at Akara. “Our robots are making a real difference in helping to keep patients safe.”

The collaboration with Friarage Hospital has led to the development of specialized workflows apps, which aim to streamline cleaning processes and reduce paper checklists. This initiative is expected to improve efficiency and provide real-time alerts when rooms are available.

Akara’s expansion into the UK market marks an exciting step forward for the company, following a successful pilot study at a US hospital that led to its acceptance into the Techstars Healthcare Accelerator in Los Angeles.

As the company prepares to formally launch a new product next year, Akara Robotics is poised for continued growth and success in the healthcare sector. Named among the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe ranking, the company recognizes its innovative spirit and leadership in the robotics and AI industry.

The collaboration between Akara and Friarage Hospital serves as a shining example of how technology can be harnessed to improve healthcare outcomes. By leveraging AI-powered robots and specialized workflows apps, frontline staff can focus on providing exceptional patient care. As the UK’s healthcare industry continues to adapt to emerging challenges, companies like Akara Robotics are at the forefront of innovation, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in pursuit of better patient outcomes.

Akara’s technology has been recognized for its potential to drive positive change in the healthcare sector. The company’s commitment to improving patient safety and efficiency is evident in its innovative solutions, which are set to shape the future of healthcare.
