Toyota Unveils Compact Electric SUV, Urban Cruiser, Poised to Rival Volvo EX30 in European Market
The Brussels Motor Show next month will see the debut of Toyota’s latest compact electric SUV, the Urban Cruiser. Set to arrive in the UK in the third quarter of 2025, this fun-sized EV is designed for the European market and measures just 5 inches longer than the European-only Yaris Cross.
With its side-by-side 10.25-inch cluster screen and 10.1-inch infotainment display, the Urban Cruiser boasts a sleek design that positions it as a formidable competitor in the growing compact electric SUV segment. Under the hood, the Urban Cruiser is powered by two battery pack options: 49 kWh and 61 kWh. The smaller pack supports up to 144 HP and 140 pound feet of torque, while the larger pack option ups that to 174 HP and 221 pound feet of torque.
For drivers who opt for the dual-motor system, power levels increase to 184 HP and 221 pound feet of torque. While its specs may not match those of the more powerful Volvo EX30, Toyota’s Urban Cruiser is designed to provide a balance of performance and practicality. With features like downhill assist, trail modes, snow mode, heat pump, and manual battery preconditioning, this EV is geared towards everyday driving needs.
The Urban Cruiser will be built on a new battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform that frees up extra space for the battery and occupants. This design decision enables Toyota to offer a more spacious interior while keeping costs in check.
As part of its push into electric vehicles, Toyota has introduced several innovative features that enhance driver safety and convenience. Active safety features like adaptive cruise, active collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, and a 360-degree camera will be standard on all models. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will also be available as standard features.
Pricing for the Urban Cruiser remains under wraps, but Toyota’s competitors may find themselves facing stiff competition from this compact electric SUV. With its unique blend of performance, practicality, and innovative features, the Urban Cruiser is poised to rival the Volvo EX30 in the European market. Set to arrive in the UK and other European markets in the third quarter of 2025, the Toyota Urban Cruiser will offer a compelling alternative for drivers seeking an affordable and capable compact electric SUV.
