Threads Introduces Photo-Sharing Revolution Sparks Creator Concerns Over Ownership

Threads, the popular social media platform, has introduced a new feature that allows users to share photos and videos without including the original post. This change has sparked both excitement and controversy among users, with some expressing concerns about the potential impact on creators.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained that the new feature is designed to make it easier for users to add their own creative takes to trending images and clips without quote posting. When you share someone’s photos or videos using this feature, your post will include a credit to the creator, along with the original poster’s username in the top left corner of the photo or video.
However, not all users are thrilled about the new feature. A photographer on Threads complained that the platform would apply a small watermark-like credit to the image without providing a link back to their account. Yet, creators will receive a notification when their posts are reused, and they’ll also have the ability to turn resharing off from their account settings.
To use this feature, simply long-press on the image or video you want to share and select “Use media.” This creates a new thread with space above it for your own comment. You can then add your text and share the post without including the original post’s comment.
But if you’re concerned about losing control over how your content is shared, toggle off this feature from your account settings. To do so, tap on the person icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, then select “Settings” and navigate to “Account” and “Media.” From there, toggle “Media reuse” off and confirm with a pop-up window.
Another social media platform, X, has a similar feature for videos that includes a credit beneath the video and a link to the original post. However, this feature only applies when users choose to share their content using the “use media” option.
For users who want to take control of how their content is shared, Threads’ new feature offers a convenient solution. By adding your own text and sharing your own interpretation of trending images and clips, you can engage with your audience without giving up control over your content. The built-in credit to the creator ensures that you’re supporting the original poster’s work while also expressing your own unique perspective.
Overall, Threads’ new feature is a thoughtful addition to the platform’s suite of tools for users who want to share and interact with content in creative ways. By giving creators more control over how their content is shared, Threads is helping build a more supportive and inclusive community for all users.
