John Logsdon, founder of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University, expressed skepticism about the possibility, citing the demands and risks associated with both roles. “NASA Administrator is a full-time, high-level government job,” Logsdon said. “Taking time off to train for and carry out another spaceflight seems to me to be a little implausible.”

George Nield, a former head of the FAA’s office of commercial space transportation, also raised concerns about the risks involved. In a 2020 analysis, Nield calculated that US spaceflight has a fatal failure rate of 1%, citing the need for careful consideration and succession planning.
