Qualcomm, Intel, and Wiliot Unveil Ambient IoT Alliance

A significant move to transform the way we interact with Internet of Things (IoT) devices has been made by several prominent organizations, including Qualcomm and Wiliot, in forming the Ambient IoT Alliance. This multi-standard ecosystem aims to create a seamless experience for users by harnessing energy from ambient radio waves, light, motion, heat, or any other widely available source.

Ambient IoT, a concept that has been gaining traction in recent years, offers a scalable and potentially cost-effective alternative to traditional non-ambient versions of IoT devices. Bluetooth, 5G Advanced, and 802.11bp are expected to play a pivotal role in supporting this class of devices, which can be used for various applications such as location, temperature, and humidity sensing.

The Ambient IoT Alliance is not intended to replace existing standardization activities but rather to promote ambient IoT and contribute documentation, support, and use cases to relevant efforts. The coalition’s founders believe that by working together, businesses, telcos, technology vendors, and standards bodies can accelerate the global standardization of ambient IoT.

“We’re excited to join forces with like-minded companies to drive innovation in ambient IoT,” said Dr. Kamesh Medapalli, senior vice president at Infineon Technologies, one of the alliance’s founding members. “This strategic focus on IoT and energy leadership is crucial for our company’s mission to drive digitalization and decarbonization.”

The Ambient IoT Alliance envisions a future where wireless radios in mobile devices and appliances are connected to more IoT-networked devices, enabling applications such as supply chain management, retail channels, and healthcare delivery services. By leveraging artificial intelligence, ambient IoT can unlock significant ROI potential and revolutionize customer experiences.

Moreover, the use of ambient IoT components offers a way to reduce energy consumption and minimize maintenance time, aligning with Infineon’s strategic focus on IoT and energy leadership. “Ambient IoT is well aligned with our motto of driving digitalization and decarbonization,” said Medapalli.

Atmosic CEO David Su noted that ambient IoT is the key to sustainable IoT adoption, enabling wireless tracking solutions to use very little power or harvested energy. This allows companies to operate at maximum efficiency while reducing their environmental footprint.

The alliance’s momentum suggests that this movement has the potential to transform the way we interact with IoT devices and unlock a more efficient, sustainable future for businesses and individuals alike.
