PhysicsWallah Launches Aryabhata 1.0 AI Model to Revolutionize JEE Main Maths Education for Indian Students
In a significant breakthrough, PhysicsWallah (PW), a leading education technology company in India, has launched Aryabhata 1.0, a cutting-edge language model designed specifically to assist students with JEE Main Mathematics. This innovative tool is part of PW’s broader initiative to develop Small Language Models (SLMs) tailored to the unique needs of Indian learners.
Named after the ancient Indian mathematician Aryabhata, who made significant contributions to Indian mathematics and astronomy, this model draws inspiration from India’s rich history of mathematical innovation. Aryabhata 1.0 was initially trained on a vast corpus of question-answer pairs, carefully curated by PW’s team of experts to ensure that the model’s responses align with pedagogical patterns commonly used in competitive exams.
The model’s performance was remarkable, achieving an impressive score of 86% in the January 2025 session and 90.2% in the April session. This outstanding result was achieved despite the model being relatively small, with only 7 billion parameters and trained on a single H100 GPU. The achievement marks a significant milestone for PW’s mission to harness AI to support students in their academic pursuits.
“We believe that AI can be a powerful tool for students, but it requires careful design and development to meet their needs,” said Prateek Maheshwari, co-founder of PW and chair of the Indian Edtech Consortium. “At PW, we’re committed to building models like Aryabhata 1.0 that offer real support to students, helping them navigate complex mathematical concepts and achieve their goals.”
Aryabhata 1.0’s development is grounded in a combination of supervised fine-tuning (SFT), reinforcement learning (RL), and rejection sampling. This approach enables the model to refine its responses based on feedback from educators, developers, and researchers who test and refine the model. PW plans to expand Aryabhata 1.0 to cover JEE Advanced and a broader range of mathematical domains, providing support for students pursuing higher education in India.
Educators, developers, and researchers are invited to test Aryabhata 1.0 and provide feedback to help refine future iterations. PW is committed to ensuring that the model continues to improve, providing students with the support they need to succeed in their academic pursuits.
Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro recently achieved an impressive score of 336.2 out of 360 marks, outperforming the student who topped the JEE Main exam with 332 marks in 2025. While this achievement is notable, it highlights the potential for AI-powered tools like Aryabhata 1.0 to provide real-world benefits for students.
Aryabhata 1.0’s launch underscores PW’s commitment to harnessing the power of AI to support Indian learners. By developing SLMs tailored to specific subjects and domains, the company aims to create a comprehensive education ecosystem that leverages the strengths of AI to provide personalized support and guidance to students.
As India continues to grow as a global hub for education and innovation, PW’s efforts to develop cutting-edge language models like Aryabhata 1.0 will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of education. By providing real-world benefits for students, these models have the potential to transform the learning experience, enabling students to reach their full potential.
PW plans to integrate AI-powered tools across various aspects of education, including personalized learning pathways, adaptive assessments, and collaborative learning environments. With its focus on JEE Main Mathematics and expansion into other subjects, Aryabhata 1.0 is poised to make a significant impact on the education landscape.
