Perplexity Unveils Carbon Integration to Revolutionize Enterprise AI Search
As Perplexity continues to make waves in the industry, its latest acquisition of Carbon is poised to further solidify its position as a leader in knowledge discovery engines. The integration of Carbon’s comprehensive retrieval framework into Perplexity’s tech stack will grant users a direct way to plug in their external data sources, from Google Docs and Notion to Hubspot and Slack.
This move is expected to expand the knowledge pool powering Perplexity, making its responses more accurate and context-rich for users. The expanding scope of AI search has made it an indispensable part of workflows, with individuals and business users alike relying on this technology to find relevant insights and information.
However, the web’s vast nature and the proliferation of proprietary data have created a “data gap,” where uploading internal files and data becomes infeasible for business users dealing with large volumes of sensitive information. Sanjeev Mohan, former Gartner Research VP for data and analytics, has identified ETL for unstructured data as one of the biggest AI trends for 2025.
Perplexity’s acquisition of Carbon is designed to tackle this challenge head-on. The company plans to integrate Carbon’s retrieval engine and connectors into its tech stack, giving users a direct way to connect their diverse data sources and retrieve the information they need to use with LLMs. With native integrations with over 20 data connectors and support for more than 20 file formats, including text, audio, and video files, Perplexity is poised to revolutionize enterprise search.
The integration of Carbon will enable Perplexia to provide users with a range of benefits, from extracting information from proprietary documents and customer meeting insights to leveraging retrieval-augmented generation workflows. By making enterprise search more accessible and saving companies the hassle of building their own RAG pipelines from scratch, Perplexity is addressing some of the most critical gen AI use cases.
To ensure the security of proprietary data, Perplexity has already taken steps by encrypting all information from internal and private sources on its engine and transmitting and storing data through Carbon’s connectors in an encrypted manner. Existing customers using the managed API have been notified for offboarding, with the Carbon team assisting them in transitioning to the new platform.
As Perplexity continues to expand its scope and capabilities, this acquisition marks an exciting development in the company’s journey to revolutionize enterprise AI search. With the integration of Carbon, Perplexia is poised to become a go-to solution for companies looking to unlock the full potential of their knowledge discovery engines.
BARC US VP of Research Kevin Petrie noted that leading adopters of Perplexity are most focused on customer service, document processing, image processing, and recommendation engines. He emphasized the importance of governance controls to ensure that proprietary data remains secure and protected from public exposure.
Perplexity’s acquisition of Carbon is a significant step towards addressing the “data gap” in enterprise AI search. As the company continues to execute on this integration, it’s clear that this move will have a lasting impact on the industry and cement Perplexity’s position as a leader in knowledge discovery engines.
