SkyDrive Inc. has unveiled a bold vision for the future of urban air mobility in Osaka, Japan, with the launch of the “Osaka Diamond Routes” eVTOL network. This ambitious project aims to revolutionize transportation in the city by connecting four key areas: Shin-Osaka/Umeda, Morinomiya, Tennoji/Abeno, and the Osaka Bay Area.
Scheduled to commence operations in Morinomiya by 2028, with expansion phases set for 2030 and beyond, this network promises to transform the way people move around Osaka. The partnership between SkyDrive and Osaka Metro is a testament to the city’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
At the heart of this initiative is SkyDrive’s innovative three-seater eVTOL aircraft, designed to seamlessly integrate into daily city life. These lightweight aircraft will offer passengers an efficient and exciting travel experience, complete with stunning aerial views of Osaka’s vibrant cityscapes.
Osaka Metro, one of Japan’s busiest transportation systems, serving 2.4 million passengers daily, has long been at the forefront of urban mobility. Its “e METRO” Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform is now being enhanced by the integration of eVTOL services, further solidifying its position as a leader in Osaka’s transportation network.
The proposed routes will not only connect major tourist destinations but also provide a unique opportunity for passengers to experience Osaka from new heights. According to SkyDrive, “Our eVTOL aircraft will transform intra-urban journeys into exciting and memorable experiences, giving passengers the chance to enjoy the city’s stunning aerial views while flying in privacy and comfort.”
As part of its efforts to finalize vertiport locations and establish safe and efficient flight routes, SkyDrive and Osaka Metro are working closely with local government and other stakeholders. The joint initiative aims to unlock new possibilities in air mobility and provide passengers with added value through new air transport services.
Osaka’s reputation as a leading city for innovation and tourism is set to be further enhanced by this groundbreaking project. With Expo 2025 on the horizon, SkyDrive will feature its latest aircraft, “SKYDRIVE,” at the event, while Osaka Metro continues to operate its extensive 137.8-kilometer transit network.
As air mobility continues to gain momentum globally, cities like Osaka are poised to reap the benefits of this technology. With the launch of the “Osaka Diamond Routes” eVTOL network, Osaka is taking a significant step forward in its quest to become a hub for innovation and sustainable transportation.
