OpenAI’s flagship language model ChatGPT, along with its developer-facing API and Sora, experienced a significant outage on Wednesday, leaving users frustrated. The company confirmed that it had largely recovered by 9pm PT, but not before issuing several updates to its status page.
In a tweet, OpenAI stated that ChatGPT, API, and Sora were down, but have since recovered, providing some reassurance to users. However, the exact cause of the outage remains unclear, with speculation surrounding its potential relation to the recent launch of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.2 or simply a technical glitch.
As part of its “12 days of OpenAI” event, which began earlier this week, the company had launched Sora publicly, but reportedly underestimated the demand for the service, leading to issues with video generation and server capacity. Meta’s products also experienced a global outage on the same day, adding to the chaos.
OpenAI developer community lead Edwin Arbus attributed the outage to a “config change” that caused many servers to become unavailable. He clarified that the issue was unrelated to the Apple Intelligence integration or the “12 days of OpenAI” event, which aims to ship new products every day leading up to the holiday season.
This incident is the latest in a series of outages affecting tech giants, including Meta’s recent global service interruption. The “12 days of OpenAI” event has seen the company release several new products and updates, including the o1 reasoning model, reinforcement fine-tuning research program, and Apple Intelligence integration.
OpenAI has been working to resolve the issue and provide a fix as soon as possible. In a tweet, the company apologized for the inconvenience and promised to keep users updated on the status of its services.
