North Carolina Unveils Groundbreaking Drone Technology to Enhance Disaster Response Efforts

The state has secured a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to deploy drone-in-a-box technology across the state, following devastating hurricanes like Hurricane Helene and Florence in 2018.

Following these natural disasters, which left widespread destruction and displaced thousands, North Carolina is determined to revolutionize its response efforts using cutting-edge technology. The drone-in-a-box system, designed by experts at the U.S. Department of Defense’s Advanced Systems Manufacturing facility, will be instrumental in enhancing disaster relief operations.

The innovative drone system consists of a compact, protective box that houses a quadcopter drone, equipped with essential medical supplies, communication devices, and advanced sensors. This setup enables authorities to swiftly deploy the drone to remote areas, where traditional response teams may face difficulties due to hazardous conditions. The drone can then be operated remotely by trained personnel, collecting vital data on damage assessments and providing critical supplies like insulin to those in need.

According to Nick Short, interim director of North Carolina’s Division of Aviation, “This technology is a game-changer for our disaster response efforts. With the ‘drone in a box,’ we can place a drone with medicine on the side of a road and have it ready for deployment within minutes, rather than waiting for a team to navigate treacherous terrain.”

The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation will initially pilot the program in Lumberton, a city severely affected by past hurricanes. The grant funding will cover research, public engagement, and studies during the pilot phase, ensuring that local communities are informed and involved throughout the process.
