Eleven months have passed since the historic Ingenuity helicopter made its final flight on Mars, but engineers and scientists at NASA are now shedding light on what led to its untimely demise. The Ingenuity helicopter’s on-board navigation sensors were unable to decipher enough distinct features in the relatively smooth terrain to determine its position. This led to a catastrophic failure, with all four blades snapping off under the strain.

According to Håvard Grip, Ingenuity’s first pilot at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, “The available data suggests that the navigation system was overwhelmed by the sheer uniformity of the Martian surface, rendering it unable to accurately determine our position.” The available data also revealed that during its initial flights, the helicopter successfully identified pebbles and other features to establish its position. However, three years later, it was flying over a region of Jezero Crater characterized by steep sand ripples, which proved too uniform for the navigation system to effectively track.

This incident highlights the challenges posed by Mars’ vast, barren expanse, where subtle variations in terrain can be imperceptible to unaided sensors. To unravel the mystery, NASA and AeroVironment scrutinized the terrain where Ingenuity operated during its 72nd flight, which took place on January 18th.
