Melbourne’s unique blend of urban sophistication and natural beauty won me over during my eight-year stay in the city. From its diverse culinary scene to its exceptional shopping and cultural offerings, there were countless reasons why it’s considered one of Australia’s top destinations. However, as a transplant from the Gold Coast, where I grew up with a more relaxed coastal lifestyle, I soon discovered that Melbourne’s fast-paced rhythm and unpredictable weather were not for everyone.
The city’s notoriously changeable climate was a challenge I never fully acclimated to. One day it could be sunny, the next rainy – a far cry from the Gold Coast’s predictable tropical weather. Despite this initial culture shock, Melbourne’s cultural diversity quickly won me over. The city’s multicultural heritage is on full display in its food scene, where you can find cuisine from every corner of the globe.
From Ethiopian injera to Afghan kebabs and Cambodian street food, Melbourne’s culinary landscape is a true melting pot. But it’s not just the food that makes Melbourne special – the city’s arts and sports scenes are equally impressive. With a plethora of theaters, galleries, and performance venues, there’s always something on offer for art lovers and sports enthusiasts alike.
The city’s reputation as a sporting hub was evident in its numerous world-class events, from the Australian Open to major cricket matches. For shoppers, Melbourne’s central business district offers a treasure trove of hidden laneway boutiques, historic arcades, and quirky stores that can’t be found elsewhere. The bigger shopping centers also provide everything from high-end fashion to mainstream retailers.
In addition to its many shopping and cultural attractions, Melbourne is home to numerous parks and green spaces – including the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens and the Royal Botanic Gardens – which provide a tranquil oasis in the midst of the bustling city. One notable aspect of Melbourne’s appeal is its famous shopping scene. The inner fashionista in me adored scouring vintage markets for unique treasures, while my husband appreciated the wider range of mainstream retailers on offer.
However, as much as I grew to love Melbourne’s charms, there were also some aspects that didn’t quite mesh with our family’s lifestyle. The urban sprawl can make it difficult to navigate the city’s vast network of roads and suburbs, which was a particular challenge for us. And while the cost of living in Melbourne is undoubtedly high, we found that it was still more expensive than many other major Australian cities – including Sydney.
Our decision to leave Melbourne ultimately wasn’t taken lightly, but we felt that it was the right choice for our family’s long-term happiness and well-being. We’ve since relocated to a small town called Bright, located in the foothills of the Australian Alps, where life is easier and more affordable – if perhaps less glamorous.
In retrospect, my time in Melbourne was filled with incredible experiences and memories that I’m grateful for. While it wasn’t without its challenges, I have no regrets about calling Melbourne home – even if only for a few short years.
