Maharashtra has launched a cutting-edge fisheries surveillance project with the help of ideaForge Technology Limited and Schnell Drone Technologies Ltd. The initiative harnesses advanced unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology to monitor and safeguard the state’s 720-kilometer coastline.
The project, which began in July, leverages indigenous drone technology to enforce the Maharashtra Marine Fishing Regulation (Amendment) Act, 2021. Deployed in seven coastal districts, these drones enable real-time monitoring of fishing vessels and identify unauthorized activities. By doing so, they aim to safeguard traditional fishing communities while deterring illegal fishing activities.
Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane said, “The goal is to effectively enforce the regulation, protecting the interests of our traditional fishing community while preventing illegal fishing by migrant fishermen.” Manual inspections can be challenging, as these boats often evade capture. Our drones will address this issue by providing faster and more efficient patrolling, collecting real-time evidence, and covering multiple areas simultaneously.
