The cost of hiring an end-to-end AI-enabled software development tool has surpassed that of a junior developer in India, marking a significant shift in the industry. Devin, built by Cognition Labs, is one such tool that aims to replace junior programmers or developers in organizations with a monthly price tag of $500 (approximately ₹4 lakh). Devin offers features including front-end bug fixing, creating first-draft pull requests, and making targeted code refractors.
The unlimited user access model makes Devin appealing for organizations looking to streamline their development process. Its Slack integration allows it to work on issues directly when users tag it in a thread. Internal tests have shown impressive results, with Devin becoming the number one contributor in Cognition Labs’ internal tools and front-end repositories last month.
Devin has demonstrated its potential by solving, testing, and fixing an issue in Anthropic’s model context protocol (MCP). The company has also reported significant benefits from using Devin. Advantage Solutions’ VP of Engineering, Sam Purtill, shared a story where an engineer used Devin to resolve a bug, took their son to a piano lesson, and returned home to a perfect fix – all within minutes.
Other organizations have praised Devin for its ability to clean up dead code and speed up tests, allowing engineers to focus on more important matters. Nubank has also experienced improvements with Devin, demonstrating the potential of AI tools in enhancing software development workflows. However, concerns remain about the limitations of these tools, particularly when it comes to explaining and understanding the code generated.
Mark Essien, CEO of Hotels.ng, highlighted the importance of understanding AI-generated code, stating that “AI always gives you an answer, and the answer is not just wrong, but also very hard to detect what is wrong about it.” Cory Zue, founder of SaaS Pegasus, shared a similar experience with interns who shipped a feature but left behind a “mountain of code” no one understood.
While Devin’s capabilities are undeniable, the Indian IT sector’s adoption rate for AI tools in the workplace remains uncertain. Earlier this year, ISG’s assistant director and principal analyst, Mrinal Rai, expressed skepticism about GenAI solutions’ ability to impress clients. However, if Devin can truly transform software development, the $500 price tag may seem like a small price to pay.
As the use of AI tools in Indian IT continues to grow, it is essential to address concerns about their limitations and ensure that they are integrated into workflows in a way that benefits developers and organizations alike.
