Hyundai’s Electric Air Taxi Startup Supernal Relocates HQ to California Amidst Industry Turbulence

Supernal, Hyundai’s electric vertical takeoff and landing startup, is relocating its global headquarters from Washington, D.C. to Irvine, California, amidst a complex regulatory landscape and intense competition in the urban air mobility market.

The decision affects around 45 employees and is part of a broader strategy to enhance collaboration and communication across teams. Jaiwon Shin, president of Hyundai Motor Group and CEO of Supernal, stated that the move will enable the company to better tackle the technical and regulatory challenges facing eVTOL pioneers.

Supernal remains committed to launching its eVTOL service in 2028, with around 700 employees working on the project since its spinout from Hyundai in December 2021. However, the eVTOL industry is facing significant headwinds, including Volocopter’s struggles and Lilium’s recent ceasing of operations.

Toyota has poured an additional $500 million into Joby Aviation, setting a target for a 2025 commercial launch. As Supernal sets its sights on California’s tech-savvy landscape, the company is positioning itself for success in a rapidly evolving industry.

With Hyundai’s backing and a dedicated team of engineers, researchers, and policymakers, Supernal is well-equipped to navigate the complex challenges facing eVTOL companies. The D.C. office will continue to serve as a hub for policy and regulatory efforts, while the California location will enable the company to drive innovation and collaboration across teams.

Supernal’s decision highlights the importance of adaptability, strategic partnerships, and forward-thinking in driving success. With its new headquarters, the company is poised to make a significant impact on the urban air mobility market, leveraging its commitment to innovation, collaboration, and regulatory expertise to stay ahead of the curve.
