Ascension, a healthcare giant with operations spanning 140 hospitals and countless assisted living facilities, has confirmed that nearly 5.6 million individuals are among the millions whose sensitive data was compromised in a devastating cyberattack attributed to a notorious ransomware gang.

The attack, which struck in May, brought the healthcare sector to a standstill as staff scrambled to revert to manual processes, resulting in errors, delayed or lost lab results, and diversion of ambulances to other hospitals. Despite the chaos, Ascension managed to restore most services by mid-June, but not before acknowledging that the attackers had made off with protected health information and personally identifiable information for an undisclosed number of people.

A recent filing with the attorney general of Maine shed light on the scope of the attack, revealing that the stolen data varied depending on the individual affected but included names and medical records, payment details, insurance information, government identification numbers, and other personal identifiers such as date of birth or address.
