Unleashing Innovation: Top Speech AI Projects Shine at 2024 AssemblyAI Hackathon

Developers from across the NYC area converged on SoHo for the 2024 AssemblyAI Hackathon, hosted by the company’s Developer Relations team. The in-person event brought together coders of all levels to harness AssemblyAI’s industry-leading Speech AI models.

Peter McKee, head of Developer Relations, outlined the hackathon’s core objectives: fostering innovation, community engagement, and friendly competition. With free credits and on-site support at their disposal, developers were free to explore the full potential of AssemblyAI’s products.

The teams dove into hacking, spreading out across the offices like a symphony of creativity. Some teams began with pre-conceived concepts, while others pivoted mid-stream as they grasped the API’s offerings. The AssemblyAI team provided guidance and support, walking attendees through the Getting Started docs and answering questions on everything from Speaker Diarization to chatbot development.

As the day unfolded, the energy in the room became electric. Whiteboards were grabbed, portable monitors were set up, and creative juices flowed freely. One attendee even brought a microphone to capture their own voice for work with AssemblyAI’s speech-to-text models – a testament to the team’s enthusiasm.

At 1 pm, pizza and swag rolled in, providing much-needed fuel for the hackers. As they refueled, the teams were reminded of the project submission requirements: tell us who you are, what you built, and show it off! The anticipation was palpable as the presentation time drew near.

The judging panel consisted of AssemblyAI’s VP of Marketing Christy Roach, Senior ML Developer Advocate Smitha Kolan, and Peter McKee. The audience watched in awe as the projects were presented, each one showcasing innovative use cases for AssemblyAI’s Speech AI models.

The range of projects on display was breathtaking, with everything from mental health journaling assistants to interactive learning tools. The AssemblyAI team was thrilled to see such a diverse array of applications, particularly in the real estate investment deals and customer support chatbots.

After a challenging day of judging, the winners were announced: Slavik Kaushan and Mario Uribe took home the top prize with Dealty, their speech AI tool that streamlines real estate investment deals. The runner-up was Muse by Arjun Sivakumar, Ritvij Saxena, and Siddharth Prabhakaran, a mental health journaling assistant that wowed the judges.

AssemblyAI gave a special shoutout to project Say What by Stuart Allen, Nikki Hu, Kirk Enbysk, and Peter Shrieve-Don, an interactive learning tool that turns audio clips into transcriptions. The connection didn’t stop there – team photos were taken, LinkedIn info was exchanged, and accolades were given.

The 2024 AssemblyAI Hackathon will go down in history as a testament to the power of innovation and community engagement. As developers continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible with Speech AI models, one thing is clear: AssemblyAI is leading the charge. The company’s commitment to fostering a vibrant community of developers and AI enthusiasts has solidified its position as a leader in the Speech AI space, providing developers with the tools and support needed to bring revolutionary ideas to life.
