Startup SandboxAQ is pioneering a novel approach that leverages artificial intelligence and navigation systems attuned to the Earth’s magnetic field, known as MagNav. By combining these technologies, the company aims to enhance existing GNSS systems and provide an alternative primary navigation source in case of GPS outages.
At the heart of SandboxAQ’s solution lies its AQNav hardware, which employs quantum magnetometers to detect subtle changes in the Earth’s magnetic field with unprecedented precision. By analyzing the unique fingerprint of magnetized rock formations in the Earth’s crust, AI is used to accurately pinpoint an aircraft’s position, even in the presence of external interference generated by the aircraft itself.
The US Air Force, Boeing, and Airbus have all participated in testing AQNav, with hundreds of kilometers of flight tested across various aircraft types. The system has been deployed in real-world scenarios, including two major military exercises, demonstrating its feasibility and potential for mitigating GPS vulnerabilities.
SandboxAQ’s journey began within Alphabet, Google’s parent company, between 2016 and 2022, where a team developed the initial idea to explore applications for artificial intelligence and quantum technologies.
