GAC Group Unveils Flagship EVTOL Model AirJet as Company Expands into Sustainable Air Transportation
Chinese auto conglomerate GAC Group has launched its new eVTOL-centric business venture called Govy, marking the company’s entry into sustainable air transportation. The unveiling of the AirJet, GAC’s flagship model, is a composite-wing “flying car” with flexible vertical takeoff and landing capabilities.
The AirJet boasts an impressive carbon fiber composite structure, which accounts for over 90% of its weight, allowing it to achieve exceptional efficiency and range. Weighing only one-third that of a traditional car body for the same volume, this design makes it ideal for longer all-electric flights.
As part of its Govy brand expansion, GAC has announced plans to initiate airworthiness certification for its eVTOLs in 2025, with the aim of building an assembly line for commercial operations in China by the following year. The company’s future solid-state battery technology is expected to further enhance its eVTOLs’ range capabilities, enabling them to travel distances of up to 400 km on a single charge.
The AirJet joins forces with the current iteration of the AirCar in the development phase, positioning GAC for a one-two punch in sustainable air travel for Chinese customers. While still in development, XPeng’s “Land Aircraft Carrier” built by its eVTOL venture AeroHT appears to be the closest competitor to achieving this feat.
GAC initially unveiled the Gove concept vehicle during its Tech Day Event in June 2023 as part of its mobility lineup. The subsequent renaming to AirCar and introduction of the AirJet suggest that GAC is taking a multi-pronged approach to eVTOL development.
The aviation industry has long been aware of the challenges associated with combining EV designs that drive on roads with eVTOL components. Combining these technologies would require significant advancements in infrastructure, certification, and manufacturing processes.
Govy’s launch marks an exciting milestone for GAC Group as it solidifies its position in the rapidly evolving sustainable air transportation market. With its innovative AirJet model and commitment to developing cutting-edge eVTOL technology, GAC is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of air travel.
