The DJI Mini 5 Pro Battery Life Test: A Real-World Analysis of Flight Time

Accurately testing battery life has become complicated due to the removal of a key feature in the latest Fly App update, which allowed users to define the exact percentage for low-battery and critical-battery warnings. This change is particularly problematic for drone enthusiasts who rely on this feature to test their equipment.

The removal of this feature limits our ability to accurately test the true flight time of drones. In the early days of my drone experience, I used to set the low-battery warning on my Mavic 2 Pro to 5% or 10%. This allowed me to hover the drone during a test when the low-battery warning started, and as it tried to land automatically, I would just hold up on the joystick to keep it airborne. The battery would hit 0%, but the drone still hovered for at least two more minutes.

By removing this feature, manufacturers are making it difficult for users to accurately test their equipment. To get a number close to those promised flight times, you have to fly in unrealistic conditions. Our test replicated the manufacturer’s likely method: taking off and letting the drone hover with no pictures, videos, or movement.

The results of our test were telling. We took off at 2:00 PM and still hovered at 40% battery life after 29 minutes. The first low-battery warning triggered at 2:26 PM, and despite our best efforts to fight it, the drone attempted a forced landing after 29 minutes. This is significantly shorter than the advertised 36 minutes.

There are two clear reasons why we missed the goal: altitude and software limits. At high altitudes, the air is thinner, so the propellers must spin faster to keep the drone airborne, consuming more power. By contrast, at lower altitudes, the drone can fly more efficiently. Our inability to modify the low-battery or critical-battery warnings meant that we couldn’t extend the flight time.

The challenges of testing battery life are complex and multifaceted. To get an accurate reading of the DJI Mini 5 Pro’s battery life, it’s essential to fly in a controlled environment with realistic expectations. This may require flying at lower altitudes or using features like obstacle avoidance to simulate real-world conditions.

As drone enthusiasts, we must adapt to these challenges and find creative ways to test our equipment. By doing so, we can gain a better understanding of the true capabilities of our drones and push the boundaries of what’s possible. With careful testing and realistic expectations, it’s possible to get an accurate reading of battery life and unlock the full potential of your drone.
