Asia’s Venture Funding Market Hits 10-Year Low Amid Global Rebound
The Asia venture funding market has experienced a sharp decline, totaling $65.8 billion in 2024, marking its lowest point in over a decade. According to Crunchbase data, this marks a significant reversal from the previous year, when global venture investment rebounded.
In Q4 2024, venture funding to Asia-based startups reached $15.3 billion, a 12% increase from Q3 but a 33% drop from Q4 2023. The decline can be attributed to geopolitical events and China’s struggling economy, which has had a ripple effect on the region’s startup ecosystem.
Seed and angel funding remained one of the few bright spots, increasing by 5% to $7.5 billion. However, early-stage and late-stage/technology funding took a hit, with early-stage funding totaling less than $29 billion, a 5% decline from 2023, and late-stage and technology funding seeing a 42% falloff from the nearly $51 billion those rounds saw in 2023.
The drop in late-stage and technology rounds is particularly concerning, as it hampered any potential rebound for Asia’s venture scene. While Q4 numbers for late-stage and technology rounds jumped 30% from Q3, this was largely due to low quarter-over-quarter numbers.
Tensions in the Middle East, Japan’s sluggish growth, inflationary pressures, and China’s “deflationary spiral” are contributing factors to the region’s struggling venture market. The US-China trade tensions also pose a threat, potentially heightening tensions with several countries on the continent.
The $66 billion in venture raised by startups in Asia may seem modest compared to previous years, but it is essential to consider the broader global context. Data lags are most pronounced at the earliest stages of venture activity, with seed funding amounts increasing significantly after the end of a quarter/year.
The decline in Asia’s venture market serves as a reminder of the complexities and challenges facing the region’s startup ecosystem. Policymakers, investors, and entrepreneurs must work together to address these challenges and create a more favorable environment for innovation and growth.
