The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Geophysical Institute has taken a significant step forward in enhancing drone safety, particularly in harsh Arctic conditions. Located within the Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration (ACUASI) at UAF, this cutting-edge facility addresses a critical challenge for drones operating in Alaska’s climate. The risk of ice buildup on wings and rotors can severely impact aircraft performance and control, posing a significant threat to safe flight operations.

For drones to become a reliable option for cargo delivery, search and rescue, and other uses, they need to be able to handle icing conditions. In Alaska, that’s a major barrier to overcome. Aircraft icing can occur across a range of altitudes, from near the surface to 40,000 feet, depending on factors such as temperature, moisture, and cloud type.

The new tower stands at approximately 16 feet tall and is situated within a fenced area behind UAF’s Reichardt Building. This facility enables researchers to create various types of calibrated icing conditions, allowing drones to fly in a controlled environment that simulates real-world scenarios. Designed by Coda Consulting of Ottawa, Canada, in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada, this experimental setup has been enhanced to provide precise control over icing conditions.
