Adobe Unveils Firefly AI Video Generator with ‘IP-Safe’ Technology

In a significant move to cater to the growing demand for AI-powered video generation tools, Adobe has launched its Firefly Video Model. The new video capabilities will be available through Adobe’s redesigned Firefly web application and integrated into Premiere Pro, Adobe’s professional video editing software.

The system can generate 1080P video clips from text prompts or images, with features like camera angle control and atmospheric effects generation. “We’re the most useful solution because we’re IP-friendly, commercially safe model,” Alexandru Costin, who leads Adobe’s AI initiatives, said in an interview. “You can use our model. There is no risk of IP infringement.”

The launch comes as competition intensifies in the AI video generation space, with recent entries like OpenAI’s Sora generating significant attention. However, Adobe’s focus on commercial safety and professional workflow integration is expected to help it stand out in the market.

To ensure transparency, Adobe will include Content Credentials, a type of digital certification, with all AI-generated video content. This aligns with the company’s leadership in the Content Authenticity Initiative, which aims to provide verification tools for digital content.

Global brands including Dentsu, Gartner, and Salesforce have already partnered with Adobe to leverage its Firefly technology. The company’s strategy has focused on embedding AI capabilities to enhance user experiences rather than directly monetising these tools — a move that appears to be testing investor patience.

Despite the challenges in converting AI innovations into meaningful financial gains, Adobe has maintained strong operational metrics. The Document Cloud segment emerged as a standout performer, posting a 17% revenue rise to $843m in Q4 FY24. However, the Creative Cloud division has faced slower-than-expected growth, further intensifying concerns about the company’s ability to sustain its momentum.

For Q1 FY25, Adobe expects its total revenue in the range of $5.63bn to $5.68bn. Digital Media segment revenue is projected to reach between $4.17bn and $4.2bn while Digital Experience segment revenue is forecasted at $1.38bn to $1.4bn.

Adobe’s valuation, trading at less than 27 times estimated earnings, remains below its 10-year average and offers room for potential upside if the company can deliver on its AI ambitions. Analysts note that Adobe’s ability to translate its technological leadership into sustainable growth will be crucial in regaining investor confidence.

The Firefly Video Model is available now, featuring ‘IP-safe’ technology for commercial use. It integrates seamlessly with Premiere Pro and offers features like camera angle control and atmospheric effects generation. Content Credentials ensure transparency in AI-generated content. Key highlights of the model include its ability to generate 1080P video clips from text prompts or images, as well as its inclusion of Content Credentials.
