Abu Dhabi Airports has taken a significant step forward in its efforts to establish Abu Dhabi as a hub for air mobility by partnering with BETA Technologies to deploy its eVTOL charging infrastructure. The collaboration marks a major milestone in the Emirati government’s vision to launch regional air taxi routes, which are expected to commence in 2026.
At the heart of this partnership is BETA’s Charge Cube and Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS), two cutting-edge technologies designed to provide high-power electric aircraft charging capabilities. The Charge Cube is a permanent, high-power electric aircraft charger capable of delivering up to 320 kW, making it an ideal solution for rapid charging of compatible eVTOL aircraft, such as the ALIA models.
One of the key features of BETA’s Charge Cube is its ability to operate under a wide range of conditions. The unit is designed to be flexible, with a 50-foot cable that allows for easy placement on ramps or other surfaces. It also boasts CCS protocol, making it compatible with multiple charging standards and ensuring seamless integration with various eVTOL aircraft models.
The Charge Cube’s advanced technology is complemented by BETA’s Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS), which optimizes battery temperature to maximize performance and turnaround times. This innovative system is designed to ensure safe and efficient charging operations, even in extreme environmental conditions.
Abu Dhabi Airports has selected Al Bateen Executive Airport as the initial site for the installation of BETA’s Charge Cube and BTMS. The airport will serve as a testing ground for the technology, allowing Abu Dhabi Airports to fine-tune its infrastructure and ensure that it meets the needs of its growing air taxi network.
The region’s commitment to sustainable aviation fuels, reduced emissions, and increased air mobility is driving innovation in the field, with Abu Dhabi Airports playing a key role in shaping this vision. The partnership between Abu Dhabi Airports and BETA Technologies is significant, not only because of the advanced technologies involved but also due to its strategic importance in supporting the launch of regional air taxi routes.
“BETA is excited to continue the international deployment of our charging solutions,” said Chad Nichols, Charge Operations Lead at BETA Technologies. “We believe this commitment to permanent ground infrastructure shows the strength and momentum of our industry.”
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO at Abu Dhabi Airports, also emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating that “our collaboration with BETA ensures the robust infrastructure needed to make Abu Dhabi’s air taxi network a commercial reality, safe, sustainable, and built for the future.”
BETA Technologies has a strong track record in developing innovative eVTOL solutions. The company’s ALIA aircraft family, consisting of conventional fixed-wing electric aircraft and electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, has achieved significant milestones, including over 83,000 nautical miles flown by BETA’s aircraft.
The company is expanding its charging network globally, with sites now operational in the U.S. and Canada. Its Charge Cube is interoperable with electric aircraft, ground vehicles, and is being adopted by major OEMs worldwide. This widespread adoption of BETA’s eVTOL charging solutions underscores the growing demand for sustainable air mobility and the importance of reliable infrastructure support.
As Abu Dhabi Airports prepares to launch its regional air taxi routes in 2026, the deployment of BETA’s Charge Cube and BTMS at Al Bateen Executive Airport will provide a critical foundation for the network, enabling seamless electric aircraft charging and setting the stage for the successful launch of regional air taxi routes.
The partnership represents a significant milestone in the development of regional air mobility. The deployment of BETA’s eVTOL charging infrastructure will support the launch of sustainable air taxi routes, providing a critical foundation for safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly air travel. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, this collaboration highlights the importance of innovation and strategic partnerships in shaping the future of air mobility.
