Aaron Pierre is set to shine as John Stewart, the beloved Green Lantern hero, in HBO’s upcoming series Lanterns. The character was first introduced to him through Cartoon Network series Justice League Unlimited, which aired from 2004-2006 – roughly the same period when Pierre was between 10 and 12 years old.
This exposure, coupled with Kevin Conroy’s iconic performance as Batman, undoubtedly shaped Pierre’s understanding of the character. While he never took the time to watch Ryan Reynolds’ infamous portrayal of Hal Jordan in the 2011 film Green Lantern, Pierre does plan to watch it during his preparation for Lanterns, demonstrating a commitment to understanding the character’s complexities.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly ahead of his next big-screen project, where he lends his voice to Mufasa in an upcoming Lion King prequel, Pierre candidly admitted that his experience playing John Stewart will be different from Reynolds’. Instead, he’ll be collaborating with veteran Green Lantern Corps member Hal Jordan, a role that Kyle Chandler played in the HBO series.
Pierre remained focused on delivering his best performance during the audition process for Lanterns. Reflecting on this experience, he shared, “I believe what’s meant for you won’t miss you. So, I gave my all and then set it free. Now, I’ve been gifted the opportunity to bring John Stewart to life, and hopefully, I’ll serve him, as well as the Green Lantern Corps.”
With Pierre’s dedication to capturing the essence of John Stewart and his enthusiasm for collaborating with fellow cast members, excitement surrounding this project is palpable. The series’ release date has yet to be confirmed, but it is set to unfold in either 2024 or 2026.
As production on Lanterns unfolds, fans can look forward to the character’s portrayal by Aaron Pierre and how he will bring John Stewart to life alongside his fellow cast members.
