The UK Awards Leonardo $1.3B AW149 New Medium Helicopter Contract, Securing Production Line in Yeovil
In a significant development for the British defense industry, the United Kingdom has awarded Leonardo a £1 billion ($1.3 billion) contract to produce 23 New Medium Helicopters (NMH) AW149 multirole rotorcraft. The award will provide clarity over Leonardo’s production line in Yeovil, England, amidst months of uncertainty.
The NMH program aims to address a critical capability gap left by the retirement of the Puma HC2 helicopters and smaller rotary fleets in March 2025. The new AW149 fleet will play a vital role in supporting British defense operations around the globe, with tasks including battlefield support, troop transport, logistics support, threat suppression, Close Air Support (CAS), Command and Control (C2), Search and Rescue (SAR), Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC), and maritime patrol operations.
The AW149 can accommodate up to 16 fully equipped troops, offering a range of 545 nautical miles. Its versatile design enables it to perform multiple rotary wing requirements using a single aircraft-type, significantly enhancing the UK Armed Forces’ battlefield kit.
This streamlined capability will make Britain Leonardo’s global centre for military helicopter production and exports worth an estimated £15 billion over the next decade. The MoD statement highlighted the importance of the AW149 program in delivering long-term benefits to the UK defense sector, with the platform set to undertake multiple tasks previously delivered by three different aircraft types.
The NMH contract proposal emphasized Leonardo’s commitment to establishing a production line in Yeovil, with plans to move its AW149 export production from Vergiate, Italy. The company stressed an addressable market in excess of 500 medium-class helicopters could be targeted for future export sales, underscoring its ambitions to establish itself as a leading player in the global military helicopter market.
The award comes after months of uncertainty surrounding the NMH program, with the Treasury and MoD engaged in a dispute over the contract’s prioritization. Chancellor Rachel Reeves intervened last week to approve the contract, bringing an end to speculation and securing Leonardo’s position as the sole bidder for the program.
Leonardo’s success marks a significant victory for the UK defense industry, which has faced intense competition from global aerospace giants. The company’s presence in Yeovil will provide a welcome boost to the local economy, supporting hundreds of jobs and contributing significantly to the region’s growth prospects.
The award highlights the importance of partnerships between governments and private companies in driving innovation and growth in key sectors such as defense. As the UK government continues to invest in its defense capabilities, collaborations with leading aerospace manufacturers like Leonardo will be essential in securing long-term success and competitiveness.
In addition to the NMH contract, Leonardo has also been working on a number of other high-profile projects, including the Proteus autonomous rotary wing demonstrator. The company is part of the Royal Navy’s Maritime Aviation Transformation strategy, which stretches to 2040, with the Proteus effort playing a critical role in shaping the UK’s future naval aviation capabilities.
The £60 million Rotary Wing Uncrewed Air System Technology Demonstration Programme contract marks an important step forward in Leonardo’s efforts to develop innovative solutions for military aviation. With its expertise in autonomous systems and rotorcraft design, Leonardo is well-placed to capitalize on emerging trends in defense technology.
As the UK looks to strengthen its defense capabilities, partnerships with leading aerospace companies like Leonardo will be essential in driving innovation and growth. The award of the £1 billion NMH contract is a significant milestone for the British defense industry, marking a major step forward in securing Leonardo’s position as a global leader in military helicopter production and exports.
