On July 29, 2026, Eolian Inc., leading developer of renewable energy projects announced the groundbreaking for Flint Grid, a massive 200-megawatt battery storage plant located in Jersey Township, Licking County, Ohio. The facility is designed to store approximately 5.3 hours of output, equivalent to roughly 1.06 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, making it one of the largest battery storage projects in the region.

The Flint Grid project is situated within the New Albany data center and industrial corridor east of Columbus, a hub for various tech companies and data centers. The site will serve as a critical load-serving substation, tying into one of the region’s most essential substations. This strategic location allows the battery to discharge power during peak demand hours when the substation and surrounding circuits would otherwise be limited in their ability to supply load.

The Flint Grid project is significant not only due to its size but also because it represents a major milestone in Eolian’s efforts to support the PJM capacity market, which governs electricity supply and demand in the Mid-Atlantic region. By clearing the 2027/2028 auction, Flint Grid will be the first large-scale battery storage project to qualify for the PJM capacity market and the largest to secure a spot in the auction, accounting for more than half of the new battery capacity committed for that year.

The PJM capacity auction is a critical mechanism for grid operators to ensure reliability and stability in the face of increasing demand. However, the 2027/2028 auction revealed significant challenges, with the grid operator securing only 134,479 megawatts (MW) of unforced capacity at the federally approved price cap of $333.44 per MW-day and still falling short of its own reliability requirement by 6,623 MW.

The PJM capacity market has been criticized for not doing enough to address the growing demand from data centers, which have become a significant contributor to peak demand in recent years. According to Stu Bresler, then-PJM’s executive vice president for market services and strategy, “This auction leaves no doubt that data centers’ demand for electricity continues to far outstrip new supply.”

The Flint Grid project is designed to address this issue by storing power during periods of high demand and releasing it when needed. By doing so, the battery can help alleviate pressure on the grid, reducing the need for new generation capacity or transmission upgrades.

Eolian’s founder and CEO, Aaron Zubaty, emphasizes the importance of leveraging existing technology to unlock wasted capacity in the grid. “There’s growing consternation about how the US can rapidly scale infrastructure to support America’s growing electricity demand, but not nearly enough conversation about how to use existing technology to unlock the wasted capacity that already exists on the grid,” he said in a statement.

The permitting record for Flint Grid supports Zubaty’s argument, with the Ohio Power Siting Board certifying the project in October 2022, just over a year after it was first proposed. The initial certificate covered 800 megawatt-hours (MW) of discharge capacity, while the current system will hold more than a gigawatt-hour.

Duration is crucial for battery storage projects like Flint Grid, as PJM accredits each resource class by how much of its capacity can be counted on when the system is most at risk. The longer duration of the battery’s output, the higher its value in the market.

The Flint Grid project arrives into a region where demand is expected to continue growing rapidly, with forecast peak demand rising by about 5,250 MW from the previous auction. Nearly 5,100 MW of this increase came from data centers, highlighting the need for innovative solutions like Flint Grid to address the growing strain on the grid.

For operators in the New Albany corridor, the Flint Grid project presents a critical juncture. The facility will deliver power into the existing Jug Street 138-kilovolt substation owned by AEP Ohio Transmission Company, from approximately 15 acres along Jug Street Road. By optimizing the existing infrastructure, Eolian is able to energize years ahead of a line rebuild or new gas plant construction.

The Flint Grid project marks the first phase of Eolian’s efforts to support the PJM capacity market and address the growing demand for electricity in the region. With commercial operation targeted for before summer 2027, this project represents a significant step forward in the development of large-scale battery storage projects and their role in ensuring grid stability and reliability.

The permitting record and construction schedule demonstrate Eolian’s commitment to moving quickly on its projects. The Ohio Power Siting Board certified Flint Grid just over four years after it was first proposed, and construction is expected to be completed within a few months.
