Additionally, the system does not require new radar equipment installations, as it relies on existing cellular signals. Demonstration in Dallas

The recent demonstration at AT&T Stadium showcased the capabilities of the ISAC technology. Using signals from three nearby cell towers, the system successfully detected and tracked drones in a simulated no-fly zone. A drone piloted by an Ericsson employee then intercepted the intruding aircraft, highlighting the potential for AI-powered drone defense systems.

Akhil Gokul, Vice President and Head of Technology at Ericsson Americas, emphasized the significance of this technology in providing situational awareness. “If you think about 5G networks today, they provide connectivity for devices that are connected to the network. Using the same existing infrastructure and providing new software that can connect to devices, but sense passive objects that are not connected to devices gives us a capability to have situational awareness.”

The ISAC technology offers several benefits over traditional radar systems. Firstly, it provides coverage at lower altitudes, where other UAS-detection technologies are less effective. Secondly, the system relies on existing cellular infrastructure, making it more cost-effective and reducing the need for new equipment installations.

The “low-hanging fruit” for commercial applications lies in providing drone detection, tracking, and classification solutions for high-value buildings and properties, such as energy sites, nuclear plants, and data centers.

Walmart, Amazon, and Other Companies

The growth of the low-altitude economy is also being addressed through this technology. By detecting and tracking drones, Ericsson and AT&T aim to facilitate commercial drone delivery services for companies like Walmart and Amazon.

Not Waiting for 6G Implementation

While the implementation of 6G technology is expected around 2029-2030, Ericsson and AT&T are not waiting for that timeframe to deploy aspects of their solution. Their intention was to bring some capabilities in a much earlier timeframe by leveraging existing 5G infrastructure.

The deployment of this technology will be done in waves, starting with the introduction of the prototype last February. The partners expect to roll out new iterations over the next several years, leading up to the end of the decade when 6G becomes fully implemented.

Security and Coverage

To conduct the demonstration at AT&T Stadium, Ericsson and AT&T secured a portion of the airspace near the stadium on a day with no FIFA events. This showcased the effectiveness of using existing infrastructure for drone tracking.
