DJI Terra, a powerful tool for drone mapping and surveying, has just received an exciting update that promises to revolutionize the way professionals capture, process, and analyze aerial data. The latest version introduces several groundbreaking features, including Thermal 2D Reconstruction, Rolling Shutter Correction, video-based 3D modeling, and Gaussian Splatting cluster computing.
One of the most significant updates is the integration of Thermal 2D Reconstruction, which enables comprehensive temperature measurement and mapping. This feature addresses a long-standing challenge in solar and power grid inspections, where traditional methods often relied on individual thermal images. With DJI Terra’s new capability, operators can now aggregate temperature measurements, archive complete project files, and precisely locate temperature anomalies.
To ensure the best reconstruction quality, operators are advised to follow specific field flight guidelines, including using DJI Pilot 2 in orthophoto capture mode, setting a minimum overlap of 60% forward and 50% side for normal scenes for normal scenes, and increasing overlap to 80% forward and 70% side for low-texture areas. Back in the office, the processing workflow integrates smoothly with existing DJI Terra projects, supporting POS data import and local PPK calculations.
Another key update is the introduction of high-precision rolling shutter reconstruction, which eliminates the jello effect during high-speed flights. This feature supports RS images for high-precision aerial triangulation, 2D mapping, and 3D modeling, allowing operators to mix RS images and global shutter (GS) images in a single dataset.
To take advantage of this feature, operators can enable the “Optimize RS Files” switch upon importing eligible RS data. Historical data reuse is also possible, enabling teams to reprocess existing RS imagery to achieve higher precision without having to repeat flights.
In emergency scenarios where teams lack time to capture individual photos, DJI Terra now supports direct video frame extraction for reconstruction. This feature enables the creation of high-quality photos for 3D modeling, streamlining the process and saving time.
For large-scale projects or applications requiring high model clarity, DJI Terra now supports cluster computing for Gaussian Splatting cluster computing. Cluster computation processes both visible light and LiDAR point cloud Gaussian Splatting tasks across a network of computers, significantly improving processing efficiency.
Local elevation files support has also been added, enabling seamless alignment with local datums and resolving localized elevation benchmark differences. This feature supports importing local GeoTIFF elevation files in .gtg format, ensuring that the final coordinates match the localized survey benchmarks, engineering designs, and official acceptance requirements.
The update also brings several quality-of-life improvements, including an execution record panel with a new timeline dashboard, which shows critical task steps, progress, and results. The AI Intelligent Assistant provides instant in-app guides for software operations, while 3DGS water & floating artifact optimization reduces noise on water surfaces and fixes color patch stitching anomalies.
Other notable updates include support for the South Korean KNGeoid26 coordinate system, GSI-compliant reconstruction reports, instant update notifications, one-click cache cleanup, point cloud exports in LAS 1.4 and LAZ 1.4 formats, and online documentation upgrades.
