The Austrian Ministry of Defense’s first satellite, BEACONSAT, is set to launch from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket next year, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to develop its space capabilities. Developed by Vienna-based startup GATE Space, the satellite will be equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to detect and analyze GPS and Galileo interference, providing valuable insights for military forces and civilians alike.

Austrian Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner emphasized that BEACONSAT is specifically designed to identify jamming and spoofing of position, navigation, and timing constellations such as the US Global Positioning System (GPS) and Europe’s Galileo. These systems are used by both military forces and civilians, underpinning aviation, autonomous mobility, critical infrastructure, and modern defense operations.

GATE Space, founded in 2022, has gained significant attention for its innovative rocket propulsion systems. Backed by Austrian venture capital firm ROI Ventures and Boston-based Techstars, the company has assembled a talented team of experts to drive its mission.

As the prime contractor for BEACONSAT, GATE Space is working closely with Danish satellite manufacturer Space Inventor and Austrian firm IGASPIN GmbH, which builds GNSS interference detection payloads. The company has also partnered with numerous Austrian subcontractors to ensure the successful completion of the project.

The European Space Agency (ESA) is providing €500,000 in support, while the MoD is contributing €1 million ($1.2M). This significant investment underscores the importance of space technology in modern defense operations and the growing recognition of its value by governments worldwide.

The ESA’s approval of dual-use capabilities, which support both military and civil activities, marks a historic shift in the agency’s approach to financing space projects. In November 2023, the ESA’s 23 member states voted in favor of this development, paving the way for more collaborative and innovative projects like BEACONSAT.

Austria’s partnership with its Dutch counterpart on the LEO2VLEO project highlights the growing trend of international cooperation in space technology. The two nations will jointly develop three demonstration satellites designed to maneuver between low Earth orbit (LEO) and very low Earth orbit (VLEO). These satellites will provide proof of concept and in-orbit demonstration of defense applications, addressing Europe’s urgent need for sovereign, rapid-response space assets.

The LEO2VLEO satellites are expected to follow BEACONSAT into orbit in 2027 and will offer improved communications, agility, and Earth observation capabilities while minimizing space debris risk. The project is being funded by the European Defence Fund, which signed a contract with prime contractor ISISPACE worth €10 million.
